Bekämpfung von Drosophila suzukii in Reben: Versuchsbericht 2014 Organic Eprints
Daniel, Claudia; Matray, Silvia; Gallati, Philip.

Matray, Silvia; Herz, Annette; Pfiffner, Lukas; Sigsgaard, Lene.
Research institutes and universities of nine European countries are involved in the research project EcoOrchard to develop appropriate strategies to promote functional agro-biodiversity in organic pome fruit production. Therefore field trials have been laid out at different sites in seven member states in 2015, where flower strips were sown into the inter-rows of the orchards. Natural antagonists like Syrphidae, Coccinelidae and parasitoids of codling moth are supposed to be promoted with these additional floral ressources. Besides faunal and floristic studies, practical methods and indicators have been worked out to monitor functional biodiversity.

Drosophila suzukii Monitoring in verschiedenen Habitaten 2014 Organic Eprints
Daniel, Claudia; Matray, Silvia.

Daniel, Claudia; Matray, Silvia; Gallati, Philip; Tuchschmid, Andi.

Herz, Annette; Matray, Silvia.

Nutrition ecology of Ascogaster quadridentata (Hymenoptera, Braconidae) and its host in apple orchards Organic Eprints
Herz, Annette; Drexler, Nils; Matray, Silvia; Veekmann, Oliver.
The codling moth, Cydia pomonellaL. (Lepidoptera, Tortricidae) is the key pest in apple growing worldwide. Its increasing resistance against various insecticides, including granulosevirus based plant products, initiate the search for supporting tools for natural control, e.g. the activity of parasitoids. The Chelonine species Ascogaster quadridentata, an egg-larval parasitoid, does not host-feed, but requires sustainable access to sugar resources for nutrition. In the framework of the European CoreOrganic Plus project EcoOrchard (http://coreorganicplus.org/researchprojects/ ecoorchard/)weestablished flowering strips in the rows between trees with the aim to support natural enemies. In adjacent laboratory tests we explored which kind of flowering plants and...

Organic farmers’ reality to manage functional agrobiodiversity in European organic apple orchards Organic Eprints
Fernique, Sarah; Penvern, Servane; Cardona, Aurélie; Ahrenfeldt, Erica; Grebeau, D.; Jamar, Laurent; kruzynska, Dorota; Matray, Silvia; Ozoliņa-Pole, Laura; Ralle, Baiba; Sigsgaard, Lene; Steinemann, Beatrice; Świergiel, Weronika; Telfser, Joseph; Warlop, Francois; Herz, Annette.
According to its principles and standards, organic farming particularly rely on natural processes and functional agro-biodiversity (FAB) to benefit from essential ecosystem services. However, these processes are mostly complex, hardly visible and site-specific, thereby making it difficult to assess and manage on-farm. A European survey has been carried out among organic farmers and emphasizes the variability among countries with a diversity of techniques targeting different functional groups according to farming contexts and farmers’ expectations. The different criteria used by farmers to evaluate FABtechniques efficiency and implementation potential clearly illustrate the difficulty to assess the agroecosystem as a whole.

In many crops, the intensive use of pesticides causes major problems both for the environment and for natural ecosystem services. Apple is Europe's most frequently produced orchard fruit, requiring high pesticide input to combat the most important apple insect pests, Dysaphis plantaginea (Passerini) and Cydia pomonella (L.). Here we sought to control these pests by promoting natural enemies using sown perennial flower strips. We trialled these in the alleyways of organic apple orchards in seven European countries. Visual assessments over two years revealed a higher number of natural enemies on plant parts, and specifically in D. plantaginea colonies on trees, in flower strip plots than on trees in control plots with standard orchard vegetation. Trees in...

Pest Management in organic Apple, Pear and Stone Fruit Organic Eprints
Daniel, Claudia; Matray, Silvia; Stoeckli, Sibylle; Niggli, Urs.
Holistic approaches to pest management that aim at maximising self-regulation and resilience of orchards are a key goal in organic farming (see chapter 2). Pest management starts even before planting an orchard by site selection, orchard layout, planting systems (tree densities and pruning system), choice of cultivar and rootstock as well as cultivation techniques. Cultivation techniques and measures applied for disease control can also influence the dynamics of pest insects within orchards and need to be included in a holistic system view. In addition, the use of flowering strips to enhance natural enemies is a field of intense research. Direct control methods using biocontrol organisms or bio-insecticides are available for many pest insects. However,...
